Abstract

Collective acceptance theory is a theory of collective intentionality that explains social institutions and related facts, and is one of the important themes in the field of philosophy of social science. The philosophers Searle and Tuomela are the main representatives of the theory. As Searle said: All of human social-institutional has a common underlying structure. The aim of the study is to reveal how human society is constituted by a unique institutional structure and provide a more detailed picture for discussions on the ontological basis of social sciences by forming new defense arguments through the interpretation of collective acceptance theory and responding to the rebuttals it faces.

Collective acceptance theory can also be called Searlean collective acceptance theory. It takes Searle’s collective acceptance theory as its main contents and includes the main points of Tuomela’s collective acceptance theory. On the whole, Searlean collective acceptance theory takes collective intentionality and language as its cornerstones, uses constitutive rules as construction tools, and creates and distributes deontic power relations in society by assigning status functions of different social roles. Institutional reality and facts are thus created and maintained. Collective acceptance theory mainly faces refutations from four aspects: First, in terms of theoretical logic, collective acceptance theory faces critiques of circularity, antirealism and infallibilism. Second, in terms of theoretical completeness, collective acceptance theory faces the danger of theoretical incompleteness due to the rebuttal of lacking of nonlinguistic action on the one hand, and criticism of theoretical excess due to the reducible rebuttal of constitutive rules. Third, in terms of concept “institutions”, collective acceptance theory faces the impact of interpretations from natural kinds and historic kinds. Fourth, in terms of relevant deontic theories, collective acceptance theory faces doubts about the necessity and foundation of deontic.

The study analyzes these refutations from four aspects and gives reconstructive explanations, which form corresponding new arguments by combining them with collective acceptance theory. On the whole, the new arguments basically maintain the basic position and main points of Searlean collective acceptance theory. In addition, the study further uses collective acceptance theory as an analysis tool, expands and applies it to explain more practical aspects of human society, which enhances the explanatory power of collective acceptance theory. As the objects of social science research, collective acceptance theory provides an ontological explanation for institutions. This kind of logical analysis is not only a philosophical thinking, but also helps social sciences deepen their understanding of institutions-related issues.

Key words: collective intentionality; collective acceptance; status functions; deontic powers; social ontology
